Meriwether Lewis was born in 1774, and died in 1809, three years after he famously crossed the northwestern US with William Clark.
While acting as territorial governor of Upper Louisiana, he died of gunshot wounds while traveling south of Natchez, Misissippi. While ruled a suicide, his death is still widely suspected to be a homicide.
