Upon Sacagawea's death, her husband Toussaint Charbonneau gave William Clark full custody of their children. This included Jean-Baptiste who was born during the expedition and who Clark had affectionately nicknamed "Pompy" or "Little Pomp." Clark also adopted their daughter Lisette, who was born six years after the expedition ended but who did not survive infancy. William Clark himself already had a big brood to take care of, but he nonetheless gave Jean-Baptiste a formal education in St. Louis at age 18 he traveled around Europe and even Africa. He then returned to become a scout, mountain man and a 49er in the California Gold Rush. He died of pneumonia near Danner, Oregon at age 61.

When Lewis and Clark wintered at the present site of Bismarck, North Dakota, there they met Sacagawea and her husband in 1804. Toussaint Charbonneau was interviewed to interpret Hidatsa for the Lewis and Clark expedition, but Lewis and Clark (esp. Clark) were not overly impressed with him. However, Sacagawea his wife spoke Shoshone and Hidatsa, so they hired Charbonneau on November 4,1804 and he and Sacagawea moved into Fort Mandan a week later. Sacagawea was 16 or 17 at this time.
