The Aztecs who would later be kiled by Cortes and his Spanish Army
The Lake Texcoco was a lake on which the Aztecs built a city called Tenochtitlan. The Spaniards later built Mexico City on Tenochtitlan, which is now the present day capital of Mexico. The lake is now completely drained.
When Muslims ruled the central area of Iberian Peninsula, they built a castle near a river the called Mayrit, which means 'source of water'. The village around the castle was also called Mayrit. Later, Mayrit became Magerit. When Christians conquered the village, they changed the name to Madrid.
Because Tenochtitlan was built on a lake and later added in aqueducts to control flooding and the water levels, it is quite similar to modern day Venice. The Aztecs had small boats that they could use to maneuver between different floating land (often called Chinampas).
In In 1777 it was formed into a pueblo, but it was a already a town at the time.
Mexico City has always been the capital of Mexico, but before the arrival of Spanish in the 16th century, it was named as Tenochtitlan and was founded on March 13, 1325. Before the rise of the Aztecs, Mexico was a land with many small civilizations (or countries, if you prefer), including Toltecs, Teotihuacans, Tlaxcalans, Mayans and many more; so a "national capital" didn't exist at the time.

The leader of the Aztec Empire during Cortes' conquest of Tenochtitlan was Cuauhtemoc. Cuauhtemoc was captured and later tortured for the location of gold. Finally he was later executed when Cortes believed he was conspiring to kill Cortes.
