Have you seen the blockbuster Titanic? This was set in 1912, and gives a very good example of a womans role back then. If you haven't seen it, definatly rent it out asap! best movie ever! One key quote was when Rose was talking to her mother about her future (and seemingly unhappy) marraige with Cal, Rose says 'Its so unfair.' And her mother Ruth replies 'We're women. Are choices are never easy.' Here are some other points I've gathered for you: Women's Role in society in late 1800s to 1920s · Most widowed or unmarried women worked as Domestic servants · Stereotypical Role: If married, they stayed at home to look after the children while their husband worked and brought in a weekly wage. If single, they did work which usually involved some form of service such as working as a waitress, cooking etc. · No rights: No voting, working, couldn't own property, etc · Women were simply considered a 'helpmate' for man · Rarely married for pure love, money, status and the sake of marriage were the main reasons. · Divorced women were shunned from society · 1891: women were told that they could not be forced to live with a man if they did not want to - but because nearly all women were reliant on their husbands for a source of money, many women did live in miserable marriages Hope I've helped a bit! P.S Titanic is the best From Harleigh :)

They had jobs just like the guys yet they had to do house work to and take care of the kids. They had two jobs.

Contrary to the answer above, in a study carried out by Maud Pember Reeves and other members of the Fabian Women's Group, of working class people in Lambeth, London between 1909 and 1913, it was found that almost without exception, on marriage, women gave up paid employment to look after their husbands, and the children that usually arrived within the year. Some employers would not employ married women.

In the book, "Round about a Pound a Week" by Maud Pember Reeves, published by Virago, you can read a fascinating account of the smallest details of these women's lives, and the unending drudgery that meant they would have had no time for work outside the home.
