The war on drugs was started to oppress ethnic minorities, among other reasons. Those who worked to make drugs illegal played on racism and fear. Everyone was told through the media that drugs caused racial minorities to become violent and to be dissatisfied having sex with members of their own races and that to protect White females, drugs needed to be made illegal. There was no proof of any of this, but people were manipulated into believing this. Since that era, remnants of racism have remained in drug policies. Members of ethnic minorities are still much more likely than others to be arrested for drug offenses, and still more likely to get longer prison time. The laws are tougher against crack cocaine than powdered cocaine, and crack cocaine is used more by ethnic minorities.
