Middle Passage
Slaves were manacled and packed tightly into the holds of the slave ships.
Slaves were packed tightly on board ships to maximize profits for slave traders by fitting as many individuals as possible in a confined space. This inhumane and brutal treatment of slaves was a way to increase the number of slaves transported while minimizing costs for the traders.
Conditions on slave ships were bad for many reasons. Food was sometimes in short supply and they didn't have good ways to keep it fresh. There was no real medical care to speak of, and diseases spread quickly. Most times, the slaves were chained together and packed in so tightly, they could barely move.
Around 300 to 4OO slaves were packed into a tiny area. They were so close together that they could not move. I hope this answers your question!
In tight pack or loose pack. Tight pack is where the slaves where layed on their side, and loose pack is where the slaves where layed on their back. The tight pack allowed more slaves to be on the ship but this caused more slaves to die as they were closer together and suffocated more.
The slaves were tied or chained down and could not move unless untied (or unchained) by the workers on the boat.
they were treated horribly. they were shackled on capture. they were whipped like they were not human packed together in tight spaces. they were fed horribly were also put in a non-ventilation area.
Most slave ships were packed so tight that the slaves barely had any room to breathe! Others, were loosely packed and the slaves got their own room. Either way, both living quarters would smell really bad, since the slaves had no personal hygiene whatsoever. Also, slaves quarters did NOT have any bathrooms so they had to go in their room. (Which is disgusting)
they either sleep spoon ways which has no space to breath or loose packed were ther's space they would only be loose packed if only the captain wants more slaves to survive to make a profit.
The middle passage of the transatlantic slave trade typically lasted around 6-8 weeks, depending on the specific route and conditions. Slaves were packed tightly into ships and endured harsh and overcrowded conditions during the journey from Africa to the Americas.
