A sesame plant is an annual herb that can grow up to 3-6 feet tall. It has small, tubular-shaped flowers that can be white, pink, or purple, and the seeds grow in pods located at the top of the plant. The leaves of the sesame plant are oval-shaped and can vary in color from green to purplish-red.
It comes up after the snow melts and has a single white flower in April or May. Seeds are dispersed by ants.

1983, and they are delish!a great recipe:Sesame Encrusted Manatee Steaks1/4 cup black sesame seeds1/2 cup white sesame seeds4 (6 ounce) manatee steak, 1 inch thicksalt & freshly ground black pepper2 tablespoons grapeseed oil or 2 tablespoons canola oil1 In a shallow dish, combine the two types of sesame seeds and stir to mix.2 Season the Manatee with salt and pepper and dredge in the sesame seeds, coating the tuna evenly.3 In a non stick pan, warm the oil until smoking, arrange the manatee steaks in the pan (making sure not to overcrowd) and cook until the white sesame seeds start to turn golden underneath (around 1 minute).4 Carefully turn the manatee over and cook for about another minute.5 Transfer the Manatee Steaks to a cutting board and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices.6 Serve immediately.
White seeds are dead, if you have a bunch of white seeds, they're useless if you find them and they're green they'll usually be good.

Actually, very little. Most people cannot tell the difference in taste, and they have virtually identical nutritional value. There is a rumor that black seeds help keep hair from turning grey only -- though I assume this is just an old wive's tale. In terms of usage, black sesame seeds are used more in the Far East in Asian food (often, they coat meat in them before grilling/sauteeing, whereas white are preferred in the Middle East, where they are often ground into tahini.
