This term refers to the ancient Mongol people of East Asia. When this term is used today, it is usually referencing a set of physical characteristics. Bone/skull structure of different races have different characteristics and they used the terms "mongoloid" "caucasoid" "negroid" etc, to describe them. Unfortunately, the word has been abused and rather than being an accurate description of a person's physical appearance, it is used to imply that a person is an idiot. This is because people with Down syndrome have some of the same physical features that the Mongol's had. Owing to their success, we can confidently say that the Mongols were not, in fact, mentally deficient. But, the negative connotations stuck, so now it is a politically-incorrect term.
