The native Nahuatl (Aztec) name for these was tlaxcalli. The Spanish gave them the name tortilla. Torta is a Spanish word meaning cake . Mix the words Torta and tlaxcalli and you get tortilla. Which in Spanish cis also said to mean "small torta", or "small cake".
A corn tortilla is a mix of Maize (cornmeal), water and salt, pressed into a flat bread like object and baked, fried, or cooked on a griddle.
