A tortilla is a type of soft, thin flatbread made from finely ground wheat flour. Originally derived from the corn tortilla, a bread of maize which predates the arrival of Europeans to the Americas.
The native Nahuatl (Aztec) name for these was tlaxcalli. The Spanish gave them the name tortilla. Torta is a Spanish word meaning cake . Mix the words Torta and tlaxcalli and you get tortilla. Which in Spanish cis also said to mean "small torta", or "small cake".
It means "little cake". It is the name given to a flatbread made of corn or wheat which is widely used in Mexico and some parts of Central America.
