Basmati rice is a long grain rice, but unlike most long grain rice, it does not tend to stick together quite as much. It also has an aroma that is lovely and much more fragrant than most other rices (Jasmine rice is a notable exception). You can get Basmati rice in white or brown varieties.
Due to it's average glycemic index, it may be a better choice for diabetics than some other types of rice.
Some would say it is essential to making authentic Indian dishes. I think a reasonable replacement would be Jasmine rice; with that said, I'd buy the basmati. The cost difference is really quite small if you buy in bulk from a shop like Sprouts or Whole Foods where you can scoop out of the barrels.
