Chopsticks only make 2 thin lines of contact with the objects they pick up, so they are only good on chunky, solid objects. It's very hard to use chopsticks to pick up any appreciable amount of food that's made up of small loose solids, like couscous, trail mix, cracked wheat, or even rice that does not stick into chunks. People with less experience might also have trouble picking up round objects (peanuts), long slippery objects (spaghetti), and heavy objects (an entire slice of Pizza). Also, liquids like soup are obviously impossible to handle by chopstick.

Japanese people do NOT eat chopsticks. They eat with chopsticks. As western people eat their food with a knife, fork and spoon, many Asian cultures use chopsticks in place of the western cutlery. This requires the food to be prepared in 'byte' sized portions by the kitchen.
