Pitchforks were used to pitch hay or straw into piles, or to spread straw for livestock to bed in. They still are a common thing around the farm in today's world of agriculture, doing the things that a machine can't do in spaces where it doesn't nor cannot fit.

A garden fork (3 or 4 tines) is used to break up clods of earth after a garden plot has been dug over using a garden spade. A fork is also used to clean out stables and to handle animal feeds.
In agriculture, the garden fork would be replaced by much larger machinery pulled behind a tractor. But it is still used to break down clods of earth left from ploughing a field.
