A cup is a measure of volume, and so would contain 8 fluid ounces of liquid, regardless of what that liquid is. this is not true! a heavier liquid such as corn syrup is not going to equal 8 oz because it is obviously more dense than water. you're right that a cup is a measurement of volume but when taking a cup into weight you cannot just assume that all liquids are going to be 8 oz in a cup. i encourage you to test this by actually measuring out a cup of water into oz and a cup of corn syrup into oz.
