You can soften sugar that has hardened and won't break apart easily in the microwave. Take the hunk of sugar out of the bag, place on a plate. Microwave for a few seconds, perhaps ten, then check the sugar with a fork or spoon to see if it has softened yet. Never check the sugar with your finger or hand, sugar burns are hot and nasty. Keep repeating the process every ten seconds until the sugar has softened.
If you've a fairly small quantity of sugar to soften, put it in a plastic bag and hit it gently with a rolling pin or small hammer. As it breaks into smaller lumps, roll over or hammer the lumps until it becomes granular again.
If the quantity is larger, break it as above into smaller lumps and then put manageable portions into a food processor or blender and whiz until back to normal.
Store all kinds of sugar in sealed containers. When you first buy it, store the unopened original bag in a sealed plastic or glass container, and when you open it, transfer the sugar as needed into a smaller glass container with a screw top, such as a coffee jar .
If the sugar has been exposed to moisture and tuned hard after drying out, please discard the sugar. The taste, texture and safety of the product may be compromised if moisture is the issue. If the sugar is just hard from sitting or has large dry clumps in it, I use a food processor to break up the sugar. Pulse the sugar in small batches (do not blend because it will turn to powdered sugar). If you do not have a food processor, try putting the hard pieces in a zip top bag, cover with a towel and roll over it or tap it with a rolling pin. This should break up any stubborn pieces.
keep it in the frig. when it gets hard, it will soften in the microwave.
Yes. Be sure you put the butter on a plate or in a bowl ( do not use a plastic container). If you want to just soften it, 15-20 seconds will do. If you want to melt it, do not microwave for more than one minute.
How to soften a new hard leather sofa?
Adding meringue power to sugar and water hardens it for panoramic sugar eggs.
white sugar is sugar.

Sodium carbonate is added to 'soften' hard water (reacts with calcium and magnesium ions), however this water is NOT drinkable (potable).
To prevent it from becoming hard, make sure to store in an air tight resealable container. If it is already hard, you can add a piece of soft bread, apple or potato in the sugar overnight in a sealed container to soften it, or buy a brown sugar saver (piece of clay you soak in water then add to sugar)
Keep it in an airtight container in the freezer until you want it.
brown sugar is healthier than white sugar because brown sugar isn't as sweet as the white sugar
White sugar.
To soften a plastic that has become hard, heat can be applied to gently soften the plastic. Softening clay like Play-Doh requires water. Softening acrylic paint will require water. Softening oil based paint will require paint thinner. To soften leather, water can be used and the leather stretched back into shape before it dries.
