If you have a model with the self cleaning cycle, use a capful of vinegar or lemon juice with water before running the self cleaning feature. I usually just unplug it and pour some warm water with a little bit of bleach into the reservoir. It can be pretty diluted, like a 1:10 solution. I let it sit for about 30 minutes, then come back and empty it out through the spout. I cycle clean water through it the same way to get all of the bleach out.
This can be achieved by boiling the water before to remove impurities. Leave it to cool, then freeze for clear (or clearer at least!) ice.
