If you have a model with the self cleaning cycle, use a capful of vinegar or lemon juice with water before running the self cleaning feature. If you have a model that does not offer the self cleaning cycle, it is best to run your first few cycles with a capful of vinegar or lemon juice and water. Then, make sure that you empty the water reservoir and run a few cycles with clean water to take care of any plastic taste from manufacturing. This process can also be used from time to time to help keep your ice maker clean from impurities and help with calcium buildup caused by hard water.

I usually just unplug it and pour some warm water with a little bit of bleach into the reservoir. It can be pretty diluted, like a 1:10 solution. I let it sit for about 30 minutes, then come back and empty it out through the spout. I cycle clean water through it the same way to get all of the bleach out.

This can be achieved by boiling the water before to remove impurities. Leave it to cool, then freeze for clear (or clearer at least!) ice.
