You should get a professional in to do your couch the first time so they can identify the fabric. Is it cotton, nylon, wool, etc. Cotton and wool can shrink and will eventually make a mess of shampooing your couch. If you have a nylon blend and don't have a rug shampooer with an upholstery cleaner you can rent one from most stores. "Rug Doctor" is usually a good shampooer. Instructions are usually on the tank of these rental cleaners. If you have a "Home Depot" hardware store in your area they have the best cleaners and it only costs $19.95 to rent one for the day, BUT you have to leave a $100 deposit (too many people steal them, thus the deposit.) You will get the deposit back when you take the machine back. Their products for rug and upholstery cleaning is called "ZEP" and is my favorite type of shampoo cleaner.
It’s a reality of life that the most used items in a household will eventually get dirty. At some point, most of the upholstered items in a home will have to be cleaned either professionally or through a do-it-yourself method. If taking the items into a business is too expensive or out of the question, here is a step by step guide on cleaning upholstery at home.
1) Start with a dry vacuum. Make sure that all of the dirt, dust, crumbs, etc that can be removed with a simple sweep of the vacuum are gone before moving on to the steps that involve cleaning fluids. This will make the process easier, and will keep the cleaning fluids from mixing with excess dirt and actually making the upholstery dirtier.
2) Check the tags of the upholstery that needs to be cleaned. Make sure the fabric can be cleaned with a commercial cleaning fluid and that the upholstery does not need a specific cleaning product. Also, if the tags have a recommendation for cleaning products use those instead of another option. The manufacture typically knows the best product to use.
3) Choose a test area for the cleaning solution. Use a designated cleaning fluid meant for upholstery and take a small sample of it to test on the furniture. Pick a spot like the bottom of a couch cushion or one that is not usually seen in case the fluid damages the upholstery. If the test goes well, it is safe to move on to the next step of the process.
4) Get cleaning! Take a sponge and spray the cleaning fluid on the upholstery. Scrub in small, circular motions to ensure that dirt is being loosened from the lower levels. After the scrubbing is done, wipe the upholstery down with a damp cloth to ensure that all of the suds are gone.
5) Let the upholstery dry overnight to make sure that the job is finished properly. If possible, use a fan positioned on the upholstery to speed up the drying process.
Voila! That’s all it takes to get upholstery cleaned and looking its best in no time at all.
Many see cleaning upholstered furniture as a chore, but it is sometimes easier than it seems. Many pieces of furniture only require a mild detergent or vinegar and water, but others need deep cleaning by hand. It is best to check the label on the furniture to see if it says professional or dry clean only. In those cases, using any type of detergent can ruin it. It can be expensive to get a professional so doing it on your own would be a good idea. Even if you do something wrong, you will be okay if you are under warranty. So if you are not under warranty anymore, it might be smart to get someone else to do it.
The first thing that you need to do is take all of the pillow, cushions, and throw blankets off of the couch. A good thing to do before you start cleaning is loosening the dust from the furniture. A way to do this is getting a small dusting brush to loosen it, and then use a vacuum brush to get rid of it. You can vacuum the entire couch. You can do the back and sides, as well as the arms and platform legs. Then, you can vacuum the dust from both sides of each cushion of the couch. Once you are finished vacuuming, you can put the cushions back onto the couch.
Next, you can create your mixture to clean the sofa. You can mix a cup of warm water for each quarter of a cup laundry or dish detergent. It would be best to mix this in an electric mixer until it takes the form of whipped cream. Before adhering straight to the furniture, try putting the mixture on a rag or cloth and rubbing it on a small part of the back of your furniture. If it fades when dry, you should get it done professionally.
If it doesn’t fade, get a rag and start rubbing it onto the furniture. Dirt will start to show up, but you can just wipe it away using a scraper. When this happens, you can rinse the area with a wet cloth. Then, just let the furniture dry and enjoy.
