The easiest way is to prepare a white cake mix as the package directs (or use your favorite recipe if you want to make it from scratch). Divide the batter into several equal portions, and use a couple drops of food coloring to color each portion. If you want equal "stripes" of each color, you'll need to buy batter separators (available at cake supply stores) and follow the directions given with them (essentially you put he separators in the pan, then put the batter in, removing the separators after the batter is in the pan). If you want more of a tie-dyed effect, randomly place blobs of colored batter in the pan, then swirl through the batter with a butter knife. It looks best if you put some uncolored batter between the colored blobs. Don't swirl too much, or the colors will get muddy.
