The Frigidaire FFC0522 should be defrosted once there is significant frost buildup within the freezer.
The Frigidaire FFC0511 Chest Freezer is equipeed with automatic defrost.
The Frigidaire FDF70S1 does not come with auto defrost, unfortunately. You'll have to purchase their flagship model for that feature.
Manual defrost is the instructions for you to manually defrost your freezer and automatic defrost is saying the freezer defrost on it's own.
I believe the obvious would be the benefit, you would not have to manually defrost the freezer, bbesides that there is no difference.

If you have the electronic climate control system it most likely is a Vacuum Hose leak Start under the hood on Passenger side and replace all hoses from canister to under the dash this should help. With a Vacuum leak it defaults to defrost mode
Refer to your owner's manual. If you lost it, one can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. If that fails, try manually defrosting some of the items in your freezer. You may also call Maytag to come and inspect the freezer, particularly if it is under warranty.
One of the advantages of having a self defrosting freezer is no need to manually clean up the ice build up. Another great thing about manually defrostation is frozen foods are not as prone to stick together. Sorry but "defrostation"?
