Apparently Philips and Lite-On formed a joint venture back in 2007 for the optical drives, the name of which is Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation. So, whether you buy a Philips or a Lite-On nowadays, you are getting the same thing.
Typically not using either company's products (as I prefer either Sony or Samsung optical drives since they seem to be most reliable), I had not heard that they had combined forces at least in this area. Very interesting! Thank you for asking the question.

CDRW and DVDRW
Yes, the drive can. Everything else depends on your disc writing software.
types of optical disc drive are: cd,dvd,blueray,cdr,cdrw,dvdrw,mp3,mp4
The MacBook Pros come with an excellent built-in DVD/CD rw drive. Most name brand external drive can usually be added if required. The LaCie drives are popular and often include their LightScribe software enabling label printing directly onto the disc.
No. A DVD would be categorized as a storage device.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Pen drives, thumb drives, flash disk... whatever name you're using for them, tend to be unreliable. Often a minor internal fault can cause you to lose the entire backup. But they're convenient, compact and you can put a lot of data on them. Removable hard drives have their own set of problems. They're larger, much more fragile, the moving parts tend to fail and they don't like to be "bumped" when they're writing. But either way, have a good backup for your critical data. The advantage to a removable DVDRW is that you can save your data and take it to any machine, and if the drive fails, you still have the DVD that you can read from another machine.
Very likely that your lenses are dirty, especially if the computer is in a room where someone smokes. Check first to make sure that your computer operating system recognizes the drives. They should be listed and have drive letters assigned in "My Computer" for Windows systems. If so run a cleaning disk through them. If that doesn't work you may try manually cleaning the lens by opening the drive and gently swabbing the lens with alcohol soaked swab. Note that this will void your warranty, so if it is still in effect get it fixed by that route instead. If your drives are not recognized by your operating system, then possibly the IDE cables have become disconnected, devices connected in the wrong order on the cable, or jumpers are improperly set on the drives.
