Theoretically indefinitely. The disc is only spun only when it's being read/accessed, so no damage can be done to the player from this side. THERE IS, however, a possibility, that an inserted disc (be it DVD, Blue-Ray, CD or any other type) CAN cause damage, if the drive is, for example, transported with the disc inside, or if the disc has structural integrity issues and is spun (Fairy Tales of discs 'exploding' inside drives are not so fairy-tale'y after all).

The best practice is to put the disc away when you're done with it. This will prevent accidental damage to both the player and the disc.
