If you're trying to burn to a Dual Layer DVD, you need a DL DVD Writable drive.
My Acer aspire 5100 has a DVD plus r dl and i tried burning a movie to a DVD plus r and it didnt work what kind of disk should i burn it to?
after you Download the DVD you should convert it using convertxtodvd it's a program and then try to burn it to the disk you got it should work that is what i use

Very much depends on the capabilities of the drive. Most drives will tell you in the manual. Or you can look up the drive on the manufacturer's website and check there. Some drives will have a DVD+/-DL on the front, if it says "DL" it can handle dual layers.
