Not everyone likes to text. Some people don’t like to mess with the tiny keyboards and others just don’t want to have to pay for texting. However, if you sit in front of your computer a good deal of the time, you may be interested in texting someone on a wireless phone from your computer. The following instructions will show you how to do this.
Open your email program. Instead of typing in an email address, you will type the person’s phone number, along with their carrier’s domain name. For example, if you want to text someone who has AT&T for their wireless carrier, you will type the area code and phone number in like this: 5555555555@txt.att.net. All of the fives just represent a sample area code and phone number. You would enter the recipients area code and phone number before the @ sign. If the person texts you back, you will receive it in your email just like any other email, while they have received a regular text message. Keep in mind that the recipient may be charged for the text message you send so only do this if you know they like to receive text messages.
Each carrier’s text address will be slightly different. For example, if you text a Verizon customer, the part that comes after the @ sign is vtext.com. If you do not know the recipient’s wireless carrier, go to any reverse lookup directory and type in their cell phone number. While the results won’t list their name, it will list their carrier. Then, you will still need to know the domain name of the carrier, or the part that comes after the @ sign. Look on the carrier’s website to find this information. If you don’t find it there, just give them a call.
Following the above steps will allow you to text a wireless phone without incurring texting charges or having to text on a tiny screen. You may not use it very often, but just knowing how to text someone in this manner may come in handy sometime.
You can do it through skype, but you have to pay for it.
