The QWERTY keyboard was first designed for mechanical typewriters where the most common letters/keys had to be laid out for two handed typing and where the had to be mechanical separation of the keys when they were are rest and in use striking the paper (or the key armatures could lock up).

It was designed for the typewriter (before the keyboard) and arranges the keys so that they are spread out between the fingers evenly to ensure that all the fingers are in use (with the smallest possible movements) to achieve the maximum speed of typing possible. Note there are other Keyboard layouts.
