Why does a computer need application software?

The computer program is a set of instructions telling the computer what to do.

Think of it like a more complicated version of a cake recipe. A cake recipe tells you what ingredients to use, and how much. It also tells you what temperature and how long to bake it for. Without these instructions, your cake would never resemble what it's supposed to !

A computer program works in much the same way - it gives the computer a set of 'rules' by which to interpret what the user types in - and (hopefully) comes up with the expected result.

Software is a written set of instructions for a computer. Computers have no idea what to do unless you command them. When you click on a icon or pretty much do anything it tells the computer to process the action you just did.

Only people with computers need computer programs, as far as I know? People with computers which without computer programs, would have a a boat anchor on their desk. Boat anchors are for boats ~:-

A computer needs application softwares to run certain applications on the desktop. A computer doesn't come with all the required software required to run popular games, or even Microsoft. Application softwares allow for this type of capability.
