Usually, if you did not have 'Skype' then the alternative would be 'Windows Live Messenger' if you have a web cam and a mic. then this should work out fine if you both use messenger and accept the invite.
Windows Live Messenger is no longer online and so, even if one downloads the software it will not work. Windows Messenger merged with the Skype service earlier in 2013 and so Skype needs to be downloaded instead. This can be done from the Skype site.
