A virus is a program, download, or code segment for a computer that forcefully runs a (particularly unfavourable) subsequence. A virus may have a block of code that inputs into the computer that all data should be erased. Since a computer only knows how to follow code, without an antivirus program, the computer would happily do what it was told and erase all data. You can see the limitless potentials for ill-effects a virus can cause.

A computer virus is malicious code that spreads from machine to machine. It is called a virus in that they spread much like biological viruses which pass from person to person. Just like you wouldn't want to have sex with strangers without using protection, you should not accept diskettes, CDs, download links, files, and other media from strangers without some sort of protection.
