Depending on the computer type the start up files can differ, but generally the computer runs the bios files first, after that it will load the core components of the operating system and then run further no core parts as needed

What is the pre-boot sequence?

Preboot Sequence During startup, a Windows Server 2003-based computer initializes the boot portion of the hard disk and the preboot sequence begins. This sequence consists of four steps: • The computer runs power-on self test (POST) process to determine the amount of physical memory; and • The hardware components are present. • If the computer has a Plug and Play (BIOS), enumeration and configuration of hardware devices occurs. • The computer BIOS locates the boot device and loads and runs the master boot record (MBR). Note: Windows Server 2003 modifies the boot sector during installation so that Ntldr loads during system startup. Therefore you should disable the Boot Sector Virus Protection in your BIOS Setup.

What is the difference between the BIOS and a device driver?

Well, the basic input/output system (BIOS) on a computer is a simple yet important program on a personal computer (PC) that helps the computer properly boot and run an operating system (OS) during startup. BIOS drivers are typically used in reference to the program itself, and how the program runs and interacts with other devices on the computer. The BIOS drivers on a computer are saved on a small battery located on the motherboard and allow for the proper initialization and startup of a computer when powered on. In computing, a device driver or software driver is a computer program allowing higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device.

Is virus an operating system?

A virus is a file that was programmed to harm your computer. It may be transferred to your Operating System (the environment which runs your computer) and can be hidden within program files, system files, or your account files. Viruses can severely damage your computer, so purchase a good antivirus program, such as Norton Internet Security 2011 (for windows). If you run Macintosh, you already have virus protection.

How do you troubleshoot a processor and motherboard?

When you first turn the computer on listen for beeps. The beeps are POST (power on self test) letting you know the status of the hardware during startup. *The easiest and cheapest tool to do this would be a Motherboard Tester. The tester plugs into a PCI slot and runs a diagnostic test on the Motherboard board during POST. They can be found on auction sites like EBay for under $10 (US)
