Generally, 4 1/2 weeks... Deffinately seperate the male babies as soon as this time is up or they will mate with their siblings. And never keep the father, or any outside male rat, in the same cage. He'll mate with the mother again and could kill the pups.
Actually Your Half Right - I would say that the baby's can stay together for aprox 6 weeks, but just keep an eye on them, once they start humping each other, that's the time to separate them from each other.. & as far as the father (male) goes, He will not eat/kill the pups, neither will the mother, even if the male stays with them. The only reason the pups could be eaten is if they are born dead/sick/weak/etc. It is ok & good for the mother to consume these & helps regain more protein.Baby rats will start to eat food as soon as their eyes open & they have teeth as soon as they are born so when their eyes open even hard food isn't a problem, altho its easiest & best for them to start with a softened food if not with the mother any more, If they are with their mother still, they will drink milk still & go back n forth to her food... But to answer the question, As soon as the baby rats are eating food on their own & are walking/running around (hoppers)
in my experience they start to eat and drink on their own at 3 weeks but it is ideal to wait until they are 6 weeks old. at that time the mother will wean them on her own. but be sure that at 6 weeks old you separate boys from girls or the girls will get pregnant.
