The smallest unit is the bit. It is a simple binary logic marker, 0 or 1. Eight bits make a byte.

I believe it is a kb also known as a kilobyte. 1000kb make 1 mb ( a megabyte ), 1000mb make 1 gb ( a gigabte ) and 1000gb make a tb (a terrabyte ). I don't think they go any higher.
