The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) is an Internet application protocol used for transporting Usenet news articles (netnews) between news servers and for reading and posting articles by end user client applications.
If someone wants to connect to a usenet server then they need to have a usenet client on their computer. This will be configured to access the usenet server and then will enable it to be used.
Wow, that's a little difficult but I'll try. First you need to understand the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW). The Internet is a network of interconnected locations that are able to send, receive and forward electronic data. The WWW is a collection of addresses (websites) that use the Internet for people to visit them. A newsgroup is one of many thousands of special interest groups that make up the Usenet. When a person posts a message on a newsgroup the Internet is used to send copies of that message to all of the many places (hosts) on the Internet that subscribe to Usenet. So the message is repeated at many locations all over the world and people can go to any of many locations/hosts that subscribe to Usenet to download/read newsgroup messages. Whereas, a website is in a single location. If you post a message on a website people must go to the specific address of that website to see what you posted. If someone puts an inappropriate message on a website the owner of that website can remove it. A message posted to a newsgroup is sent to thousands of different places all over the world and, therefore, impossible to delete. This is a flawed explanation but it was about the best I could do in a few? words.
Usenet servers are most commonly used by online discussion websites such as newsgroups and discussion groups. The usenet server allows discussion among many people accessing the internet through different servers.
The first protocol that was used by the APARNET was called the Internet Protocol.
