The motherboard is the base board into which the others connect. It is central to the function of the system interconnecting all the rest while the daughter boards typically provide functions non-essential to the system being logically functional (with the exception that sometimes a processor itself is on a daughterboard).

Is a modem board the same as a mother board?

No it is not. Modem board is the actual modem. Motherboard is the whole computer board. No. the motherboard is way more important. No.Mother board refers to an electronic circuit board with a number of connectors into which other circuit boards (sometimes called daughter boards) can be plugged. In modern computers, all of the required, core circuitry of the computer is located on the motherboard, and the daughter boards are used only for options and expansion (It used to be different in the old days).Modem is a portmanteau word, it means Modulator demodulator---a modulator being a device that can convert data into an electronic signal, and a demodulator being a device that can recover data from an electronic signal. A modem is a single device that performs both functions (i.e., it can send and receive data)A modem is an example of an optional peripheral device that, in some computers, is built on a daughter board that can be plugged into the motherboard. In that case, some people might call it a "modem board."
