As of my experience and information from battery manufacturers the average life span of batteries is around 18 months or more if used properly.
Battery life very much dependent on the charge/discharge cycle and usages, here are few tips to increase your battery to last longer (cell phones, mp3 players or laptop)
1. Charge battery when it is drained (not deep discharge)
2. Turn off unused hardware specially wireless (such as wifi, blue tooth)
3. De-fragment you hard disk regularly (laptops)
4. Screen brightness should be kept lower
5. Close un-necessary applications while you are mobile with your laptop as it will also give you long backup.
