I recently was given (as a pet, from my sister who bought the little thing) a little white mouse with orange wrapped around her middle. Her tail is about the length of a normal mouse, but her body is a little bigger and her ears are definitely different. (Someone commented that they look like a bat's ears.)

I called the pet store where my sister got this animal and they called her a 'multi-mammate mouse,' telling me that it was the link between rat and mice. Not the cross, but the link. She said she had researched it online.

So to answer this question, a multimammate mouse/rat is the missing link between rat and mice.
