A dot matrix is an older computer printer which operated with 2 dimensional lines of "dots".
The arm of the printer would run from left to right on the paper stamping an ink ribbon on each spot a letter was to be printed, the paper was lifted slightly and the arm moved again. These series of dots formed letters and numbers into an actual printout.
Its like the evolutionary link between a typewriter and an actual printer.
Dot matrixes are still in use today because they are rugged machines. Many of them are still used to print invoices or other forms requiring only to punch in a few numbers, especially forms with several layers at once, since the dot matrix "punches" every dot on the paper it will print on the other layers as well. Their "ink" is an actual ribbon cartridge. It lasts a very long time as opposed to powder or liquid. It is very cost effective.
It is largely used also in printing labels for mailings. A long slip of labels with tracks can be fed into the machine and it will print continuously.
I'm sure everyone has seen dot matrix printouts, either by receiving a mailing or seeing an actual printout. They formally used trackpaper, paper with slips of paper on the sides with holes that can be teared off. It was used to control the scrolling motion of the paper.
Old cash register used dot matrix systems. Some of them still do. That familiar rhythmic screeching sound as the paper comes out is the fast punching of the ink ribbon.
Hope that helps!

A dot matrix is a rectangular series of dots upon which letters can be written. A dot matrix is used to make images and words appear on television and Computer Monitors.
A dot matrix is an impact printer. A scanner is not a printer.
how do you erase dot matrix print form paper
A basic dot matrix has 9 pins, which produces an average print. A dot matrix with 24 pins (or more) will produce a better quality print.

For the most part Dot-Matrix Printers are obsolete due to the poor quality of the copy, although some commercial companies, and organizations may use a dot-matrix to create carbon copies.
There are two types of dot matrix printer 1. unidirectional 2. bi-directional
A line matrix is a type of printer which is a compromise between a dot matrix printer and a line printer.
