What You See Is What You Get - In the early days of computers, the ability of the screen to show graphics was much more limited then it is now. That meant that colors and sizes on the CRT didn't always match what the printer was going to print out. When things started to improve, WYSIWYG was a big and exciting ability! Now we pretty much expect that what we see on the screen is what is going to get printed out.

Rather than writing code yourself to produce the user interface, a WYSIWYG editor presents you with toolboxes that contain the various elements you might want to add to a page or program. WYSIWYGs make UI programming easier. But they're not always the best choice. Sometimes, a WYSIWYG will create code that a human being wouldn't have. In HTML, often, they'll insert unnecessary tags. A true WYSIWYG editor will also give an interface for directly manipulating the code.

The most popular WYSIWYG editor that springs to mind is Adobe's Dreamweaver (used to produce web pages.)
