Older or really low-end PCs will use CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors. These are made with a large glass tube similar to older televisions. They draw more power and are much larger, making them undesirable for many people.

The type of monitor in most common usage today is the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display). These monitors use a flat screen with a special membrane to display images. They use less power and are smaller, but are more fragile. Older ones also did not have as good of a screen quality as CRTs and had a low refresh rate.
