The differences between the machines, in actuality, is based on marketing and, as such, different pricing. Under the hood, they are still Dell machines built with lackluster components. Dell has always had excellent marketing and that has led to the appearance that they are machines that anyone should want. Being a professional in the computer sales and service business however, I can tell you that you are better served by buying some other machine with my preferred brands (based on the reliability experienced by my customers) are Acer, HP, Lenovo (formerly IBM until IBM spun off their PC line into a separate company just as they did over 20 years ago with their printers which is how Lexmark was born), and Gigabyte.
The Dell optiplex Gx270 can be found at more than one place for under $100.00. Tiger Direct sells the item for $99.97. P.C. Liquidations has it available beginning at $59.99.

Dell's OptiPlex GX270 Dell's OptiPlex series combines power, functionality, versatility and ease of maintenance all in one machine. Built with business in mind, yet well suited for the home user, the OptiPlex series is a computer that offers a perfect combination of reliability, power and affordability. Dell's Inspiron 531 The Dell Inspiron 531 (along with a handful of other new desktops) marks the introduction of a more streamlined Dell product family. For both laptops and desktops, the Inspiron line will represent its mainstream consumer PCs, with the XPS looping together the high-end products. In other words, so long Dimension, hello Inspiron, which makes a strong first impression with this new midtower system. Our $979 Inspiron 531 config is as fast or faster than others in its class and it also has a compelling set of features. Throw in its clean new looks, and this suddenly becomes the mainstream desktop we'd recommend first.
yes
It depends what you configure them to be on the Dell website. I5 is better than I3, DDR3 ram is better than DDR2, SSD HD's are better than disk drives etc.
I say Dell is better than HP but both are good.
The iMac does video editing better than any Windows PC.
Dell is a better manufacturer but many dell PC can develop a problem with the power supply over the years which means replacing a component. Gateways are not as a well known brand.
HP makes really high-quality printers, scanners, monitors, and desktops. Dell is a lot better in laptops (HP is terrible in that area), but is also good with desktops. Dell has more computer accessories, and is better with routers.
