MP3 Players are not an Input Device nor an Output Device but in itself a Small Computer. MP3 Players generally have USB as Input Port for Copying\Deleting Songs, 3.5mm Audio Jack as Output Port to listen, Flash Storage to store Music, A Small Processing Chip and maybe a small LCD Display to select Songs & Audio Settings. MP3 Players are Small Portable & Handheld Music Playing Stereos connected to Headphones or external Speakers to listen to Audio generally in MP3 and WMA format.
It is output (read more below)
An MP3 player uses the file.mp3 (a song for example) as its input.
It then decodes (decompresses) this as an MP3 file is a compressed file.
The resulting decoded data is then used as it's output, usually sent to a speaker with the help of a digital to analog converter and an amplifier.
A MP3 recorder would do the process in reverse and the sound would be its input and the resulting MP3 file would be it's output.

An MP3 Digital Player is an 'Output' device. Basically, anything that is a 'Player' is sending 'out' a signal like music, video and so on, to an audio source. The audio source could be headphones, and amp/speaker set up, a TV and so on. Your smart phone and tablet (iPad Galaxy etc) 'Output' their sounds to their internal speakers and screen or headphones.
You can also 'Input' some devices into a Player. For example, some MP3 players, smart phones, tablets, computers and so on may have a Microphone Input so you can record voice, instruments, sing along to backing tracks and so on.
Depends on how you look at it. For playing music and other audio it is an output device. For storing audio and other files, it is both an input and output device.
