NO, you do not. It's the "default" program for PDF (portable document format, i think) files, and Adobe may very well have created the PDF. However, there are many other programs that let you read and even edit PDF files -- some of them arguably better than Adobe Reader. I use Foxit Reader, which can be downloaded from download.com (and no, i have no vested interest in promoting this product!). I find that it loads more quickly and uses less system resources than Adobe Reader, formerly known as Adobe Acrobat.
In the extremely rare instance that you never come across a PDF document, you would not need to have any such program on your computer.
