The proper term is called ghosting. Personally I have used this software and it is amazing! Most companies you this as an easy way to keep all the settings they created on one machine and make sure that it is exactly the same on all other machines. To be honest though I am not sure if ghosting is accessible for public use as I have only used it within my IT work.
Microsoft would rather you didn't clone though because it can be viewed as illegal copying. There are virtual machines that you can download from the Microsoft website also known as "VMware". These contain pre-loaded Windows XP installed though but if XP isn't any use to you then I wouldn't recommend cloning.
