LAN stands for local area network, and has nothing to do with telephone communications. LAN has 2 purposes:

1.allows multiple computers to use the same internet connection,

2.allows local computers to talk to each other

(exmaple: sending a file from your computer to you're sister's computer)

A telephone uses analog signals, a LAN uses digital signals.
