Electronic digital computers were initially programmed using wires and "breadboards." They did not have display screens or keyboards. Of course, many modern computers have eliminated the keyboard, and screens have shrunk from deep old fashioned cathode ray tubes to touch sensitive liquid crystal displays.
Old computers used vast arrays of vacuum tubes for their primary memory, whereas today's processors employ a lot of surface mounted integrated circuitry, consume far less power, and have vastly higher processing speeds. Today a single hand held smart phone has greater storage capacity and processing speed than ALL the computational power used to launch the Mercury rocket that carried Alan Shepard into space.
