Depends on what you want it to do. I have a 10 - 12 yer old laptop loaded with a free Lunix OS and software, and it's fast because the OS is small. We travel with it and use it for navigation, internet, word processing, photo imaging (professional level), etc. You can't run modern games on it as neither the memory or processor can handle it. It does everything else I require of it.
So before you decide if your laptop's obsolete, ask yourself if it does everything you want it to.
BTW, I also have a laptop so old it doesn't have a CD drive - strictly floppy. It's a great word processor and has some of the old games on it. Still hooks up to the Net. I have no idea what version of Windows it's operating with *grin*. No reason to throw it out, though. My son used it as a journal untiil he went off to college.
