You need to install Zune on your PC it's free and is a useful bit of software if you want to expand how you use your phone.
Then plug in your phone and open up zune, use the USB to Mini USB you got as part of your charger. Zune will recognise your phone and will start to Sync the data from your phone with your PC (Transferring photos and stuff), this might take a while but you will need to do it..
Once it has finished, if there is an update available, a message will popup asking if you want to install an update, select yes.
If there is no message try to go into settings and update and search for update.
