The "Fn" key is a modifier key, much like "Shift." By itself, it does nothing. Its purpose is to use an alternative function, such as volume control or to switch to another monitor, that has been mapped to a key on the keyboard. Holding the Fn key and one of the other designated keys activates the function.

It's simple. In my laptop I just press the Fn key and hold then press the target key like Mute key. It works like the shift.
