It should be noted that the MacBook Air an iPad 2 fall under completely different categories in personal computing. The MacBook Air is an ultra-portable, which is essentially an add-on to your already existing desktop and/or portable. The iPad 2 is a tablet device which does not function in the exact same way that a MacBook Air does.
Most files that are stored on a MacBook Air will not open on an iPad 2 with the exception of document, image, and PDF files.
Your best method of transfer would either by email for smaller files, Dropbox, or iDisk.
If your iTunes doesn't 'see' your iPod when you plug it in, you have a very old version of iTunes (which you need to update) or your cable or USB port could be damaged. The sync is automatic with everything else working. You can only transfer particular recognized file types into the iPad. Word and Excel documents can only be transferred via iTunes if you have Pages and Numbers installed.
