Windows Movie Maker does not accept the .mp4 format (file name extension). However, conversion to one of the following formats will ensure the file can be imported into the program:

.asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

I converted my Quicktime movies and it was able to import into windows movie maker. "Movie Maker is not compatible with QuickTime .mov files. Best bet is to convert the .mov files to the .wmv format before importing into Movie Maker.

Click on the link in Sources and related links at the bottom of this page. This freeware can do the conversion.

(It's always a good idea to create a System Restore point before installing software or updates)

Format Factory

(You may want to un-check all the boxes on the final screen)

After downloading and installing Format Factory, open the program and choose an Output Folder.(this is where you will find your files after they are

converted)

Drag/drop your .mov video clips onto the main screen...

Select 'All to WMV' / OK...

Click...Start...on the toolbar...

That should do it. The software is safe and if you aren't comfortable having it on your computer you can always uninstall it.

Answer:

DVD movies that are protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management) can't be imported into Windows Movie Maker. Read this:

DRM stands for digital rights management. DRM is a technology used by content providers, such as online stores, to control how the digital music and video files you obtain from them are used and distributed. Online stores sell and rent songs and movies that have DRM applied to them.

Windows Media Player as well as most online stores and new devices support or use Windows Media Digital Rights Management 10 (DRM 10).

There are DVD decoders you can download online. The only problem with decoders, is that they are constantly evolving. In other words, a DVD decoder that worked for you yesterday, may not work for you tomorrow.

It's probably best to use DVD clips downloaded from the internet, rather than attempting to decode a DVD protected with DRM. That's my opinion anyway.

Answer:

Downloading clips off the internet is a good way to put DVD movie clips onto WMM (Windows Movie Maker), but you can also decrypt the DRM protection on your dvds, by downloading a DVDDecrypter. Then you can use the clips from the dvds for WMM. Dowloading the DVDDecrypter is free, safe and easy to use, so I would recommend it, but you can choose to go either way.
