It is simple all you do is hold down the ALT key and push numbers on the numeric keypad like this for a sun hold alt and type in 15 like this ☼ see or
you hold down the SHIFT key and press the thing next to the L and keep holding it down and press the 0 with the shift key held down to look like this :)

Here is what you should do:
on a laptop, press number lock shown as num lock
press and hold down alt
laptops generally have numbers written beside the letters (i.e. u,i,o,j,k,l,m)
while holding alt (dont let go off alt until you finish writing down the alt code)
type in special code which represents the character
Example: alt+mkm8 (0208) should give you 'Đ'
For other characters go to system tools in accessories and open up character map, or various online lists of special characters. The one by HTML Source (see related link) is useful because it gives a description (example 'superscript two' ²) as well as an HTML code and numeric code. Note using this, the code is ², but on the keyboard you would hold down Alt key and type 0178 on the number pad. When you let go of Alt, you get the superscript two ².
