If you have internet access you download the file from the anti virus website and run it.

Or

If you have a CD you insert it into the drive and follow the instructions on the screen

Assuming you still have a valid subscription to the anti-virus software, you simply download and install the new updates. In some versions of Norton, this happens automatically a couple times each week. My Corporate Edition of NAV does, anyway.

If the anti-virus is installed correctly, the anti-virus will turn on automatically. If the service that controls it for some reason terminates, then restarting the computer should allow it to restart.

The definitions must be kept up to date, or the anti-virus is basically useless.

Once you have the anti virus installed there is a degree of passive scaling that goes on in the background. So anything obvious will be picked up automatically and a message box should appear.

You should perform a full computer scan once a week which you can set to do automatically or manually.

If you have a file or fold that you want scanning now instead of doing a full scan you should be able to highlight the files or folders, right click and there should be an option saying scan with and the name of the antivirus software. Such as 'scan with Norton Antivirus'. That will scan just those files and give an instant report once completed.

Answer

I use anti virus programs to scan for and quarantine or remove malware. Malware is short for malicious software. The program that I like most is avast free antivirus. Avast is great because it quietly works in the background protecting me the user. It is light on system resources, the settings are very easy to tweak and the scan times are relatively short. Believe it or not but you can get very good protection for free. Yes, I said it for free. The two most popular free anti virus programs are Avast (which i use) and AVG (which I don't use anymore). AVG is not that good in my opinion because its thorough scans can take hours. Also, it missed a lot of malware. So, you should download, install and use Avast. You can get it from here.

First, you buy an antivirus program or security suite (I recommend Norton Internet Security) or download a free one (I recommend AVG Free), then you click the thing that says "INSTALL."
