This can be done a number of ways. There's a good chance your drive came partitioned and formatted, ready to go out-of-the-box. You can however, repartition it, but you will lose all data on it so back up first. Connect your drive, and make sure all software is ready to go for it before continuing. For windows xp, (and similar OS's), right click My Computer, and choose Manage. This will launch the system management console. Under the category Storage, click Disk Management. In the lower right corner of the screen you will see a list of all hard drive and cd-rom drive devices. right click the partition of the removable drive you want to modify, and choose delete partition. If will ask you if you are sure, choose the yes option (whatever it's labeled). If the drive has files that are in use, you will not be able to continue, so make sure that's not the case... Then right click the gray area where that partition used to be, and choose create partition. Follow the wizard that pops up for setting up a partition, making sure you choose the size you want the partition to be (the default is to use the entire disk, so be careful). When choosing the file system, here are some pointers to keep in mind. NTFS is the native file system for Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista. It supports file access and security controls, and file encryption and compression. it also allows you to create files greater than 2 GB, and can utilize partitions greater than many terabytes in size. It however has a bit of overhead on the disk to do these things and can lead to larger directory structures. This is not a good choice for smaller disks < 8 GB to 12 GB in size. This is the choice for you if you have a larger partition, and don't need to access it from older operating systems (windows 98) or non-windows operating systems (mac os, or linux). FAT32 is the native file system for Windows 98, ME, and can be ready by many operating systems, including MSDos, Linux, MAC OS (I think), and many others out there. It does not support file access and control (with may not be an issue anyway), and does not support encryption or compression. Files created on the disk are limited to 2 GB, and the total partition size should really not be larger that about 64 GB, but it technically can support larger disks. This file system is an excellent choice for smaller partitions < 32 GB but FAT 32 does have some overhead, so don't use it for partitions less than 2 GB. Now, repeat the create partition step for each partition you wish to create. The disk manager will format the partitions for you unless you tell it not to. I hope that helps.

How many partitions can there be on a hard drive?

As many as it can handle (how big it is). And adding partitions does not make more space. It's like putting a brick wall in the middle of a football field. :-P This is depend on your disk style, if your disk is MBR, you could only create four primary partitions or three primary partitions with one Extended partition (you could create many logical partition under extended partition) at most If your disk style is GPT, you could create as many as you can. here is an article about how to make partition from http://www.partition-magic-windows7.com/res/create-partition-windows7.html
